NNP, premature infant, NICU, NICU baby, NICU parents
Nicole Nyberg, MSN, APRN, NNP-BC

Welcome! My name is Nicole Nyberg.

I have been a nurse for over 20 years and was a NICU nurse for 13 years before I became a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner 10 years ago.

During my orientation as a new NNP, I had my son William, at 23 4/7 weeks. I was prepared to deliver him early due to the many complications I had during my second trimester, but I never dreamt that I would have a 23 weeker. I had an emergent cesarean section due to a placental abruption.

William, who weighed 1 lb. 6 oz. came out fighting! Although it felt like forever, he only spent 91 days in the NICU. Everything I knew as a former NICU nurse and novice NNP went out the window once my son was in the NICU. Everything changed for me both personally and professionally.

Now that William is a happy, healthy, funny, strong-willed and sweet 9 year old, I want to help guide, educate, and empower other NICU parents. The NICU journey is one that no one will understand unless they have personally experienced it themselves.

I hope to take my knowledge as a NNP and now a mother to a former 23 weeker and give back to all of you!

The Empowering NICU Parents’ Podcast

The Empowering NICU Parents’ Podcast was created to support, educate, and empower NICU Parents. I believe with knowledge, you can become empowered and as NICU parents, that is exactly what you need to do!

We discuss issues specific to premature infants as well as neonatal complications for term infants that may require an admission to the NICU.

If you are a NICU parent who is scared, nervous, unsure, and full of questions, then you are in the right place! ow! We developed this podcast with you in mind. The fact is that when it concerns your child, especially if they are sick or in the hospital, there is never enough information.

On the Empowering NICU Parents’ Podcast we answer ALL of these questions and SO MUCH more! As a former NICU nurse and now a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, I have years of NICU experience – but most importantly, I am the mother of a former 23-weeker. It is my unique, dual perspective that drove me to start the podcast.

Public Speaking

I enjoy speaking and sharing William’s story. I hope and pray that his life and story will make a difference and be impactful. Now that I have been on the other side as a parent in the NICU, and have gained a new perspective, I am able to speak to parents as a parent and a neonatal nurse practitioner.

I also enjoy speaking to NICU nurses, Advanced Practice Nurses and physicians at conferences and sharing my very personal and maternal perspective with them. After sitting helplessly outside of my son’s isolette and watching him fight for his life day after day, it changed me. I want healthcare professionals to know that everything they do and say matters to patients and their families. As a provider in the NICU, I know we can make a difference.

How I practice as a NNP will never be the same. I know and understand what these parents are going through. I know just how important Family-Centered Care is not only for the parents, but especially for the infants. Parental empowerment and involvement will affect neonatal outcomes for the better and that is what we all want.

NICU Products

After spending so much time in the NICU with our premature son, I now know products that will help you along your baby’s journey.

You will find products that help you to celebrate every little milestone to products that will help you as a parent along the way. Products that will empower you with education and organization so you can be the most beneficial asset for your baby!

NICU Journal

Our NICU Journal is a great resource for parents. It includes tips to get you through each day, a detailed glossary with common terms and abbreviations used in the NICU, and we address common questions parents have regarding their baby and the NICU journey.

Our journal, The NICU Roadmap was created bearing in mind all of the important tools that I felt were missing in a NICU journal. I found during my personal experience that although I knew the questions to ask, there was not an appropriate place to document all of the information I wanted to remember including details about my pregnancy, our son’s delivery, his birth stats, all of his achievements, but more specifically, his daily labs, respiratory support, results from his head ultrasounds, eye exams, daily feedings, and the plan of care each day.

With the journal, we have equipped NICU parents with all of the necessary resources and tools so NICU parents can be actively and confidently involved in their baby’s care. The journal will help ease your journey, see your baby’s daily progress and be a great keepsake for the future!

NICU Milestone Cards

The NICU Milestone Cards are to help you and your NICU baby capture and rejoice in every milestone they conquer!

We designed them because I wanted attractive, gender neutral, colorful cards to help document all of your baby’s achievements!

Newborn’s 1st Holiday Cards

We also created cards for your baby’s 1st year to celebrate each major and minor holiday! Grab you baby’s 1st Holiday Cards so you do not miss capturing one of their first holidays.

We are actively working on more products as we speak! Check back in with us frequently!
